Agritage Vietnam is an impact business initiative supported by TABA. Agritage Vietnam was established in 2016 with the vision of becoming a pioneering complex to build and replicate the Vietnam Heritage Agriculture ecosystem. Agritage is an abbreviation for Agriculture and Heritage, which is a combination of two English words. Agritage is a term that means “heritage agriculture’’.

Agritage Vietnam does business based on the ecosystem of Heritage Farm Villages and Agritage+. We have a vision of becoming a pioneer to develop and preserve the Vietnam Heritage Agriculture ecosystem. Having initiated from small local food stores, we have invested in farm stay models and have built up agritage villages where local farmers can have stable income from organic farming and eco-tourism activities. Agritage Viet Nam builds heritage farming villages with five elements, including (i) sustainable livelihoods and food security; ii) Biodiversity in agriculture; (iii) Indigenous knowledge restoration and preservation, (iv) Cultural value system and community organization; and (v) Typical landscape system through community-based tourism, adventure tours and ecotourism.

Van Ho Agritage is located in Buot village – a small village in Son La province where 59 households are cultivating indigenous agricultural products according to PGS organic standards; promoting models of medicinal forest gardens; and provides agricultural experience tourism, experiential education, and accommodation services. We are seeking for 05 foreigners to join our team in the village with specific details as follows:

Responsibilities:

• Stay in the village to take care of Agritage Hill and Agritage farm.
• Support the company’s tour coordinator/tour guide when tourists visit.
• Take care of Agritage Hill and Homestay to welcome guests or visitors.
• Take care of visitors during their stay.
• Coordinate entertainment activities, especially cultural and artistic activities for visitors.

Requirements:

• Be fluent in English (Native – speaking English volunteer is an asset)
• Live in Vietnam with long-term work permit/visa
• Commit to stay at Agritage Hill at least 3 months
• Be ready to stay in Agritage village
• Be a nature lover
• Be a farming lover
• Be respectful to diversity

Working place: Agritage Hill, Buot village, Chieng Yen Commune, Van Ho district, Son La province (around 145km from Ha Noi center).

Te Rau rice is cultivated by organic methods combined with unique folk knowledge, using probiotics and natural enemies instead of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Rice is highly appreciated for its aroma and consistency and extremely low sugar level, which is good for the diabetic.

Te Rau specialty rice product is a premium rice brand accompanied by the social enterprise Agritage Vietnam and 350 households of Muong, Thai and Mong ethnic groups in Van Ho district, Son La province. Te Rau rice is grown in the fields in the middle of the old Northwest forest. Rice with a picky soil, only grows and gives the best quality at an altitude of 400-1000m above sea level, mild climate conditions (20-230C), supplemented with cool spring water from old forest. Te Rau rice-swamps are stretchy, full, with very long beards, producing fragrant, flexible and sweet rice grains from the nutrients of the forest soil. Te Rau rice has the lowest natural sugar content of all rice varieties (0.2%). Therefore, people with diabetes often choose Te Rau rice as a natural remedy from the motherland to maintain blood sugar in the allowable range. 

Te Rau rice of Agritage Vietnam Social Enterprise currently has two rice lines: VietGAP and organic. Currently, Te Rau rice products are available on the market in major cities of Hanoi with the main distribution channels being supermarkets, clean food stores, and organic consumer groups.

In 2019, with technical and financial support from the Australian Government through the GREAT Program, Agritage Vietnam accompanied farmers in Buot village, Chieng Yen commune, Van Ho district, Son La to gradually restore agricultural farming model based on indigenous knowledge. In addition to organic agricultural products, Agritage Vietnam and the people in the village realize the potential for ecotourism development and experience tourism in the village, so they should step by step develop the agricultural-tourism village.

During the previous 3 years, Agritage Vietnam has been like a bridge between the village and friends everywhere. The potentials and beautiful scenes of the village were recorded and widely shared by media groups. The village is on a journey of change day by day, in terms of quality and quantity, but still preserving its roots, national cultural identity and natural ecosystem around the village.

Buot village fish stream

Visitors to the village like to sit and relax on the rock, drop their feet into the cool water to play with the fish. Urban children who follow their parents to the village often jump into the stream to play with fish, or enjoy feeding the fish some bread, vegetables, rice, etc. or enjoy the feeling of camping by the fish stream with their families. , in the middle of the vast green forest.

Before participating in the project and working with Agritage Vietnam, ethnic minority women in Van Ho district were still quite shy in community activities such as participating in meetings, groups and networking. In the village community, there are still many prejudices against women such as women who do not do well in the economy, women mainly do housework and take care of children, men have to do big work… Since participating in project activities, Van Ho women have gradually changed, they are more active and confident, actively participating in community activities and developing household economy. In the family, men also change gender perceptions, increase the sharing of responsibilities towards women. Each individual changes, the journey of change will be continuous and sustainable….

The process off creating a bamboo ditch take a lot of effort, from choosing bamboo, chiseling to building the ditch, leading the water and it is an experience that has been learned and passed down through many generations. Today, although the economic life of Buot village has been much more developed , the typical traditional cultural features are still preserved by the people in the village, thereby contributing to preserve the national identity.
